This challengingly steep hike is not for the faint of heart. However, the stunning views of the Hudson River Valley make the effort more than worth it. With rocky terrain and hand-over-hand scrambling required at some points, Breakneck Ridge is not recommended for beginners.

Not all hikes involve challenging terrain. This trail winds through the beautiful and peaceful Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where you’ll find the final resting place of many famous New Yorkers. In the fall, the changing leaves provide a stunning backdrop for your stroll.

This 4.3-mile trail around Bear Mountain is a popular favorite for many hikers. The well-maintained path provides beautiful views of the Hudson River and the surrounding forests. Be sure to stop by the Bear Mountain Zoo while you’re there!

Anthony’s Nose Trail
This 2.9-mile trail offers stunning views of the Hudson River, West Point Military Academy, and Bear Mountain. Anthony’s Nose is so named for its distinctive shape, jutting out above the Hudson. Though the trail has some steep sections, it’s doable for most hikers.

Harriman State Park Trail
Harriman State Park boasts over 200 miles of hiking trails to explore, making it a backpacker’s paradise. For a shorter trek, check out the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail, which runs for just over 20 miles. You’ll encounter beautiful lakes, old-growth forests, and rocky outcroppings along the way.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Trail
Just a short drive from the city, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area offers stunning views of the Delaware River, as well as ample opportunities for hiking, canoeing, and camping. The Appalachian Trail runs through the park, offering a challenging hike with unparalleled views of the surrounding area.

Palisades Interstate Park Trail
This 12-mile trail provides breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the New York City skyline. The longer hike is a challenge with plenty of ups and downs, but hikers have the option for shorter explorations of the lower portions of the trail. Be very careful when hiking near the cliffs, this hike is not recommended for anyone uncomfortable with heights.
